Overview   

Student Need:

Objective:

Compare and Contrast past with present, and evaluating the consequences of past events

-        use various sources to find info.

-        analyze similarities/differences

Students will be able to –

·       Summarize important details using various sources

·       Compare and Contrast the details of multiple events and connect these events to a historical theme.

·       Express the historical significance of past events and demonstrate their knowledge of how past connects with the present.

 

Instructional Focus:

Red Scare v. “War on Terror”

- civil rights violated in times of fear

11.5 – Analyze the major political, social, economic, technological and cultural developments of the 1920’s.

Prior Student Knowledge:

Events of 9/11 and their consequences

Russian Revolution

Communist ideas

 

Basic Segments of the Lesson:

  1. intro Red Scare- read section from text and discuss
  2. look at a political cartoon from the 1920’s – analyze as a class
  3. Look at additional cartoons- create captions, pull historical details/info from the cartons in teams
  4. Create “foldable notes” to compare/contrast political cartoons from Red Scare to more current political cartoons dealing with the “War on Terror”
  5. Use the foldable notes and Cartoon Analysis worksheet to analyze both political cartoons
  6. Compare and contrast the 2 assigned cartoons
  7. Share with class.

Materials (Things to get ready):

-Political Cartoons (Red Scare and War on Terror)

-Colored paper for foldable notes

-Cartoon analysis worksheet

-textbook


Political Cartoon Analysis Worksheet

 

Step One:

1.    List the objects or people you see in the cartoon. (OBJECTS/PEOPLE)

2.    Identify the cartoon caption and/or title. (CAPTION/TITLE)

3.    Locate three words or phrases used by the cartoonist to identify objects or people within the cartoon. (WORDS/PHRASES)

4.    Record any important dates or numbers that appear in the cartoon. (DATES/NUMBERS)

 

Step Two:

1.    Which of the objects on your list are symbols? (SYMBOLS)

2.    What do you think each symbol means? (SYMBOL MEANINGS)

3.    Which words or phrases in the cartoon appear to be the most significant? Why do you think so? (SIGNIFICANT WORDS/PHRASES)

4.    List adjectives that describe the emotions portrayed in the cartoon. (ADJECTIVES)

 

Step Three:

1.    Describe the action taking place in the cartoon. (ACTION)

2.    Explain how the words in the cartoon clarify the symbols. (WORD CLARYFICATION)

3.    Explain the message of the cartoon. (MESSAGE)

4.    What special interest groups would agree/disagree with the cartoon’s message? Why?  (SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS)
