LADY PILOTS TENNIS TEAM MAKES HISTORIC STRIDE WITH MULTIPLE PLAYOFF BERTHS!

Re-Cap of 11/1/06 L.A. C.I.F. City Section Seeding Meeting

Congratulations to the Lady Pilots Tennis Team for a slew of historic accomplishments.  For the first time in at least the last 10-15 years, the Pilots are in the team playoffs!  After going 3-10 in 2004, Coach Castillo’s initial season, the idea of the team making the playoffs seemed inconceivable.  However, after improving to 7-6 overall, 4-6 League (4th place), the idea of the playoffs didn’t seem so far out of reach.  This season’s team went 7-5 overall, 6-4 League & finished in 3rd place (also for the first time in the last 10-15 years).  This year’s impressive record launched the Pilots into the playoffs as the #10 seed in the L.A. C.I.F. City Section Invitational Division.  The team will travel to North Hollywood to take on the 7th-seeded Huskies on Monday.

On an interesting side-note, the very first contest that marked the debut of Coach Castillo as the Girl’s Tennis coach was vs. North Hollywood.  In that match-up, the Huskies took down the Pilots 7-0.  This match will be an interesting measure of how far along the team has come in the 2 years since then.

LADY PILOTS MAKE HISTORIC STRIDES IN INDIVIDUAL TOURNAMENT AS WELL

After not sending any players to either of the individual tournaments in 2004, the Pilots have increased the team’s representation from 4 players in 2005 (2 Doubles teams), to 6 out of the 10 regular varsity starters on this year’s team.

For the first time during Coach Castillo’s tenure, the Pilots are sending two players to the L.A. C.I.F. City Section Individual Singles Playoffs.  Out of close to 250 singles players in the city, only 56 are selected for the tournament.  Jackie Gonzalez, as well as Jackie “Spaniard” Humara will be part of that field of 56 entries in the tournament.

In other playoff news, the Pilots are sending 2 Doubles teams to the L.A. C.I.F. City Section Individual Doubles Playoffs for the second year in a row.  Out of close to 200 doubles teams in the city, only 56 are selected for the tournament.  #2 Doubles Cinthya Monroy & Veronica Trujillo will be making their first trip to the individual playoffs, while #1 Doubles, Margaret Young & Nancy Melgoza will be making their second such trip.  This time, however, Young & Melgoza head in to the tournament with a little more prestige, & hopes of improving upon last year’s results.  After advancing to the 2nd round of last year’s draw, Young & Melgoza lost a close match versus a tough Chatsworth opponent.  This year, after playing some awesome doubles’ tennis in Marine League play, Young & Melgoza were ranked as one of the top 16 doubles tandems in the entire city, earning them a “protected” status in the tournament.

This season has continued to be a season of remarkable accomplishments.  The Lady Pilots continue to give this school more reasons to be proud of them.  Good luck in both the team and individual playoffs!  Go Pilots! J
