LADY
PILOTS TENNIS TEAM ENDS REGULAR SEASON IN BITTERSWEET FASHION! Re-Cap of 10/26/06 Match vs. San Pedro
Congratulations to the Lady Pilots Tennis Team
for another amazing effort against San Pedro on Thursday. Despite coming up short of the team
victory, the 3 matches that the Pilots did win were quite remarkable.
In singles action,
1st-year player Jackie Humara (#4) improved upon her previous results vs. San Pedro & dominated her match right
from the start. Humara quickly opened with a 5-0 lead before finally closing out the match at 8-1.
The doubles also had a show of dominance, as #1 Doubles Margaret Young & Nancy Melgoza
completely dismantled their opponents, 8-0 in a match that was marked by numerous aces & killer smashes. The
play of Young & Melgoza was so amazing, that it cleared up any questions as to whether or not they are one of the top
doubles tandems in the entire Marine League.
The emotional story of the day,
however, was the play of #3 Doubles, “Nemo” Hernandez & Norma Santamaria. After a disappointing
result in the first match vs. the Pirates, in which Hernandez & Santamaria gave up a 7-2 lead, eventually losing in the
tie-breaker, the pair stepped on the court with a chance to redeem themselves. This time, however, the
tables were turned. After the first nine games, Norma & “Nemo” a.k.a. “N-squared”
found themselves behind, 6-3. Taking what they learned from that earlier heart-breaking loss,
these Lady Pilots fought back hard, and in an ironic twist of fate, wound up taking the match in the tie-breaker, showing
the true heart of a Pilot. Tears of joy & utter jubilation shrieked across the courts as they heard
& received the support of their entire team.
Awesome job Pilots on an amazing
season! The entire school is proud of the tremendous improvement that the team has made throughout the
season, as well as the last 3 years in helping to build this new tradition of tennis here at Banning.! J
