In 1997 the Huntington Beach Art Museum had a Grateful Dead Art
exhibit. My Mom had done a drawing of Jerry Garcia that I wanted to submit. When I went to the museum with the drawing I decided
to bring my shoes that I wore to my last Dead show. It was in Vegas and it was so hot that after 3 hours of dancing on the
hot pavement the shoes had worn thin and my toes were sticking out. Also a sticker I got from a show at Shoreiine from a box
of cracker jacks had somehow remained. I thougt of the shoes as art because they showed just how much fun the Dead were and
how much suffering one was willing to endure to see them.
When I went to the exhibit I saw my Mom's artwork
right away and couldn't find the shoes. I thought they decided not to use them. Then I left the exhibit and looked back
only to see that shoes had a special display at the start of the exhibit and were the first thing most visitors would see.
I was now truly an artist.
