It is not easy to be a Cubs fan. The last time the Cubs won the World Series was 1908. In 1908 women couldn't vote, World
War I was several years away and Teddy Roosevelt was the President. The last time they were in the World Series was 1945.
When the Cubs refused to allow a Billy Goat into Wrigley Field to watch, a curse was put on the team and it has held true.
There have been some close calls. In 1969 (the year of my birth) they were in first place in April, May, June, July,
and August. Somehow at the end of September they ended up 8 games behind the Mets.
In 1984 in a best out of 5 the Cubs won the first 2. All they had to do was win 1 of the last 3. They lost all 3 to San
Diego. I stopped eating McDonalds (they owned the Padres) and I burnt my valuable Steve Garvey baseball cards (he got the
winning hit). I cried. In 1989 the Giants eliminated them. In 1998 they won the wild card behind Sammy Sosa's 66 home runs.
They were destroyed in the playoffs by the Atlanta Braves.
Then in 2003 they came so close. It was a best of 7 to go to the World Series. Chicago was going mad. At the end of game
5 the Cubs were up 3 games to 2 and there were 2 home games remaining. All they had to do was win one. The two starting pitchers,
Mark Prior and Kerry Wood, had been almost perfect and had never lost in the playoffs. I was online making flight reservations.
Then they were 5 outs away from winning, they were up 3 to 1. That is when Steve Bartman, Cubs fan, reached out for the ball,
interfered with Moises Alou (Bartman had to go into hiding to save his life) making the play and suddenly the karma changed
and the Cubs lost big time. They lost the next day and it was over. It hurt, it still hurts.
