March 13, 1987
The night Mr. Mendoza was arrested and then later found innocent.

It was Friday the 13th. March 13th, 1987 to be exact. I picked up some friends - Rich, Beth and Guy Canino.
We were going to the Aragon Ballroom (where my Grandparents met) to see the Beastie Boys with Fishbone and Murphy's Law. We
arrived a little bit late and all of the best seats up front were taken. Then some chick put her arm around my neck and said
"let's go to the front" - so I did. I ended up in the 4th row standing in front of people that were standing on their chairs.
After only 3 songs by Murphy's Law the security guard - Paul Gerlach - grabbed me and started to run me out of the show calling
me a punk. I got away. Then I was hiding out...after awhile I stood again to watch the show....within a minute he found me,
tore me down from the seat and started to pound me in the nose over and over......I was bleeding all over the place....I looked
up and my friend Emily said "are you OK?"....well it hurt a bit I have to say. Then he took me to a back room and told the
cops that I attacked him. They arrested me. I was bleeding all over the place and they choose to arrest me, well nobody said
the police were intelligent. When in the lock up, they fingerprinted me and told me with this record I would never get a job.
Again police and intelligence are two words that do not go together. Then I started to bleed all over their paperwork so they
took me to the hospital. I had a broken nose. My Dad bailed me out and we had to go back to the show to get my friends. They
were surprised to find me with a cast on my nose since they didn't really know what happened. It was my senior year and I
had to ask a girl to the prom with a cast on my nose.....luckily she said yes.
Well I got a lawyer because I was being charged with assault. We went to court and the charges were dropped
since Paul had beaten many people that night and couldn't remember me from the others, they had no case. We filed a countersuit
and won $3,000. Well I got to see the Beastie Boys a few months later although it was tame show compared to the one I missed.
I quickly spend the money as you might expect a college student to do.
