05-04-12 vs. Birmingham - Inviational Playoffs - Quarterfinals

Pilots Have Historic Win & Avenge Team's Last Two Playoff Losses vs. Birmingham to Reach School's 1st Ever Semi-Finals...

Re-Cap of 5/4/12 Boys Invitational Playoffs Tennis Match - Banning vs. Birmingham - Quarterfinals

Congratulations to the Boys Tennis Team for an awesome victory over the Patriots in the Quarterfinals of the C.I.F. L.A. City Section Invitational Playoffs.  After a season full of painfully close 3-4 losses to the top 3 finishers in the Marine League, the Pilots can finally celebrate being on the other end of that equation, in perhaps the most important match in the school's history.  With the win over Birmingham, Banning now moves on the Semi-Finals, which is the furthest advance the team has achieved since at least 1976.

In singles, although the Pilots dropped 12 of the 16 matches, the 4 they did win, proved to be enough to get the team through.  Miguel Pila narrowly defeated Birmingham's #2 in an extremely tight tie-break, shortly after dropping his set vs. their #3, and then added a win over the Patriots' #4 to deliver the final win for the Pilots on the day.  Ryo Miralles, dropped his 1st set to his #4 opponent, but then also pulled an upset over Birmingham's #2 player, before shutting out their #2.

In doubles, Alex Chun & Isai Chun pulled out a late victory over Birmingham's #3 before producing the upset vs. their #2.  Manuel Leon & JoeAnthony Rodriguez showed their toughness, by squeaking out the win in a closely contested match vs. the Patriots' #1, before easily handling their #2 & finally clinching the team victory early in the day vs. their #3.  Oscar Renteria & Jonathan Soria seemed to cruise to their victories over Birmingham's #2 & #3, but in perhaps the most critical win of the day, pulled a huge upset over the Patriots' #1 squad, who was fresh off a very physical match vs. Leon & Rodriguez.  Renteria & Soria's win, in another extremely tight tie-break, would later prove to be THE decisive factor, as the Pilots would later realize that a loss in the match would have actually given Birmingham the win at 15-14 ½.

Great Job Pilots, once again, on this historic achievement, & Good Luck in the Semi-Finals on Monday!
