Re-cap of 5/17/11 – Boys Tennis Match
– Banning vs. Hamilton
C.I.F.
L.A. City Section Doubles Championships
Congratulations
to Daniel Gomez & Miguel Pila for a great effort in Tuesday’s 1st round loss, in a competitive match
vs. Hamilton. Although originally slated to play vs. Van Nuys, the tournament officials altered the brackets,
setting up a competitive match-up. After seemingly being shell-shocked in the 1st set, and on their way to being
routed, trailing 4-0 in the 2nd set, Gomez & Pila mounted a furious comeback racking up 3 games in a row, including
two service breaks over their opponents. The complete comeback, however, was not to be. After
a rough service game by Gomez, the comeback was over as their opponents won the last two games to close out the match.
After ranking as the top Marine League doubles squad during the regular
season, Gomez & Pila were selected to participate in this very exclusive tournament. Out of close to
500 doubles players in the entire section, city-wide, only the top 24 doubles squads are invited to participate.
In the past, the tournament field consisted of the top 56 doubles squads, which
dwindled to 32 by the 2nd round. Despite the fact that Gomez & Pila fell short of advancing
to this years 2nd round, they have achieved a more impressive simply by making the tournament. In
addition, prior to the 2011 season, each league was guaranteed between 5 to 6 entries to the tournament. However,
due to severe budget cuts, each league was only guaranteed a single entry.
Congratulations,
once again, to these two Pilots on an incredible season and a great effort in this elite tournament, and Good Luck to the
team as they begin to look toward a productive off-season, as they prepare to bounce back in 2012.
